chris5 1
Over the last week me and my brother have been trying to shoot some of the pigeons in a small wood in our grandparents garden, with our air rifles. Over the first few days we go one each but now they seem to have been scared off and avoid the woods totally. Should we give up or is there any way of carrying on without spooking them away? (we dont have any camouflage stuff because we cant afford any yet ) Thanks Quote Link to post

chris5 1
thanks both have watched the video was really helpful hopefully next week me and bro will be able to set up a hide and go early enough to get some any more advice would be great as well thanks one more question: my bro has a weihrauch HW 30 and although he is a good shot when he hit a pigeon in the head it wasn't a clean kill still which isn't what we want to do. is this just bad luck or is the gun not powerful enough for hunting? thanks again Quote Link to post
andyfr1968 772
Hi, Chris. Zini's vids are a top class bit of info and as the lads have said, a bit of recon and being able to break up your outlines will go a long way. The HW30's not really ment to be a hunter, it's a lovely little gun but only mid power, 8 or 9ish ft-lbs. That said, if you're close and accurate and the gun's shooting well, he should be able to kill a pigeon cleanly with a head shot. Good luck, fellas and let us know how you get on.... Cheers. Phantom 631
thanks andy i guess my bro was just unlucky because he is a real good shot it just shook him up a bit when it went wrong hopefully next week we can put all these ideas into action i will report how it goes Hi there Chris, You both sound pretty young to me, Ah just checked your profile 15! Right, dont know if you use ebay at all perhaps get your mam or dad to order you something like this. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=390105609209 For 15 or so quid you get TWO Complete outfits Look around his pages and you can get them in small, medium and large. I decided to get a couple after Rossy suggested them. Must admit the large is a little small for me at the moment but I can just fasten it Great value but just dont put it in the washing machine EVER!! as the charcoal componant will come out and your old lady will not thank you for ruining her washer. I suggest if they ever do need washing, wash them in clean water or just hose them down with the garden hosepipe I also reccomend an ULTRA-VIOLATE security marker pen Read this paying particular attention to posts 4, 11, 13, 17 and 31 Phantom Quote Link to post
andyfr1968 772
No one has a 100% clean kill rate. Sometimes we all have to follow up, so to speak.... All we can do is practice and hope to do the best we can. Quote Link to post

chris5 1
update me and bro spent day building hide (well i built he supervised lol ) looks good only had time to spend a few minutes in there but things came close, no pigeons yet though another stupid question: we have got permission to shoot on a farm but i dont know how to get started; do we just wander around and see what we can shoot or is it best to go without rifles so we can see whats there first? in the picture the trees are in the woods we can shoot, the field is full of rabbits and pigeons but we cant shoot there the first pic is the structure, the second is finished Edited July 19, 2010 by chris5 1 Quote Link to post
markha 99
Thats a pretty good hide you have there, If you beef the main supports up a bit more it will stand the test of time, then all you have to do is keep putting extra folliage on it throughout the year as the seasons change. It would be great if you could get permission for that field as your hide would be a good place for some static hunting. As for your farm permission, you have permission to shoot so take your guns, simple Just have a slow wander around the areas you are cleared to shoot in and make sure that you know where your pellets may go if you do miss a shot and make a call on whether shooting from different directions may be unsafe, are there houses or buildings where people may get hit by a stray pellet etc If there are just make sure you shoot with those unsafe areas behind you at all times. As your just getting in to it Im sure it will be a quick learning curve, especially the stalking of your prey and learning how close you can get before you spook them. The best bit of advice I can give you is always, always, always double check that your rifle is zeroed before going on a live shoot, never assume that its zeroed just because you did it last time, it also gets you practice on a target and gets you in the right mental frame of mind. Always try to stay down wind of your prey so your scent is carried away rather than towards your prey. Above all be safe, know where you are both going to be shooting and keep your eyes peeled for each other if you split up. Theres much to experience, just enjoy it all and have fun lads. Phantom 631
Excellent looking hide there buddy You can get started either way, the only time I dont take a gun is when I'm asking for permission! Stalk around the hedges or stay in the hide. If you can find them look for the warrens and wait half an hour or so about 25 to 30 yards until they stick their noses out, wait until they get a yard or so away from the entrabce though before given them their free lead suplements Phantom Quote Link to post
